Karibuni and Ski Weekender - La Clusaz
catered independent chalet and self catering apartments
We always like it when ski companies contact us to tell us how great they are for veggies. Karibuni have done this, and so we're listing them here as they sound a good bet for veggies - see how proudly they state this on their website. Karibuni have now obtained Vegetarian Society accreditation, which means when they say vegetarian they really mean it. And they know all about making vegans happy and stuffed silly.
What Jess of Karibuni says:
I would like to introduce as at Karibuni and Ski Weekender, both run from our chalet in La Clusaz as a very veggie friendly chalet! Our 18 bedroom chalet is fully catered - breakfast, afternoon tea and 3 course dinner with wine - and the kitchen is run by a very experienced husband and wife chef team.
Special diets, including vegan
We cater for all spectrums of diet and have several vegetarian staff. We are very good on veggie food and have obtained Vegetarian Society accreditation. We also pride ourselves on being able to cater for special dietary needs - such as gluten free diets, dairy free diets etc.
We certainly do cater for vegans - John, our chef, is very good with all special dietary requirements and likes the challenge of producing tasty food suitable for vegans. On that note he also does some great vegan cakes - including a delicious banana cake!
Environmental policies
We have very strong environmental policies and have just been recognized as a 'green chalet' by Patrick Thorne at Save Our Snow. We recycle everything - paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass, tetra packs and cans, have energy saving light bulbs, offset all our carbon emissions - both for the chalet and any flights or long minibus journeys our staff take and from this summer we will also give our guests the choice of offsetting their flights through us. Patrick very kindly gave us a good write up on the Ski Club site under Green Resorts.
Childcare
We tend to use the crèches round here as we have explained to them that the inoculation system in the UK is a bit different to France and as they now know us fairly well they are quite good at waiving the need to have certificates.
Special touches and interests
We have a sauna and well being zone including our in house massage therapist . We have a very friendly team which we like to think sets us aside from some chalet holidays.
Singles can get reasonable prices, especially if they are open to sharing.
In case it's of interest our chefs are going to be running some cookery courses over the summer months too, based in the chalet, and in particular three or four coeliac (gluten free) cookery courses as it is becoming a more and more well known intolerance.
Other activities and flexible stay lengths - including Summer
Also offered by Karibuni are skiing, walking and biking weekends and mid-week breaks in the French Alps.
The lifts do take bikes up in the summer, during June and July mainly. However we drive people to where they want to start if they come outside of the times the lifts are running so you can always start somewhere convenient to you.

extract from Times 2007-01-20 10:13:43We had an article in the Saturday Times where Caitlin Moran quoted the following about our food: 'We put the children to bed in our room – clean, bright, basic, with bunks and a double bed, and a balcony duveted in snow – and went down for supper. Husband and wife crew John and Jacqui had taken note of our tedious food intolerances with almost careless ease, and whisked up a wheat-and-dairy free menu that included the most incredible chocolate cake any of us had ever eaten. The kitchen has an ethical policy – free-range eggs, welfare meat, local produce – and, even more important, wine that you could happily sip all night, rather than down in one like cough medicine. '

Whilst this was not purely veggie (except for one member of their party) it shows our approach to food and the importance we feel that everyone places on good, healthy food – including fully vegetarian diets.
