I like ugly French ski resorts. Why? Because they are all about good snow and skiing, thus avoiding the fur-coat swagger of the posher French ski resorts. In reality, Tignes fails to be ugly because the wide open bowl of glorious mountains takes your eye away from the uninspired architecture. It's got some of the best skiing in the world.

For vegans it is a haven - plenty of good places to stay, and self-catering options abound, well-supported by the excellent supermarkets packed with dairy alternatives and even the likes of tofu and yeast flakes. French food shops always have high quality nuts, fruit and veg, gorgeous herbs and plenty of pulses and beans. Sherpa is generally cheaper than Spar, and the artisan bakery in Le Lac is dreamy.

As with anywhere in France, if you are fond of the likes of tamari, vegan cheese, faux meat, Indian spices or vegan margarine, bring your own from home.

Val D'Isere

Like other up-market French ski resorts, the main restaurants of Val D'Isere are fairly hopeless for vegetarian and vegan options. You've not even got a chance of knowing if the cheese is vegetarian. However it's a big place with a fair bit of variety, so the supermarkets and some more informal eateries can do even vegan dishes and foods. We list a fair few, and even note the chemist, which has sun screen that seems not to be tested on animals or contain animal products.
